Things you should know when moving to Thailand. How can I plan my household shipping to Thailand?

Clients are qualified for import duty and tax exemption if a Non-Thailand citizen having a one year visa and one-year work permit to import duty-free. Returning Thai’s will need to prove being abroad for at least 365 days. In both cases, the shipment must arrive within 6 months of the shipper’s arrival. Please note used personal and household effects must be imported not earlier than one month before and not later than six months after the first arrival of the importer in Thailand with non-immigration ‘B’ stamp in passport to qualify for duty-free status. Only one electric appliance is under duty-free and repeated items will attract duty-tax. Some items are not considered as personal effects or household effects by the Customs e.g. piano, bicycle, etc., so these items are subject to import duty & tax although the importer is qualified to import.

Tips For Moving Singapore To Thailand And Customs Requirements During Your Relocation To Thailand

  • Export to Thailand can expect a one week process from Singapore for packing and export customs clearance in Singapore for a direct loading container shipment and an immediate LCL shipment. This includes days for packing from your residence, container loading/preparation for export, connecting to a vessel sailing to Thailand port. But if you are foreign national to Thailand we have to wait for your residence visa in Thailand and import permit for the customs clearance in Thailand.   • Please take note vessel transit days from Singapore to Thailand will be 4 to 6 days depends on the carrier selection for your move to Thailand.

  • Returning Thai residents having stayed abroad for more than 365 days can ship back one shipment of used household goods duty-free. Full immigration stamps on passports are required.
  • Retirees, Thai resident visa holders, and education visa holders do not automatically qualify for any duty-free. Household goods cannot be exempted from duty & tax in any case, but personal effects may be qualified for duty-free.
  • Shipping to Thailand without duty-free status can be still can import but subject to duties and taxes.
  • Persons under a diplomatic status, Thai Government recognized aid organizations & Board of Investment (BOI), who are allowed to stay in Thailand for a certain period (usually one-two years) can also import one sea and one air shipments of used household goods under duty free.
  • Diplomatic shipments, Ministry of Foreign Affairs normally takes 10 days after arrival to proceed with diplomatic approval and will incur demurrage charges to the shipper.
  • Kindly take when you shipping containers to Thailand cities, mostly narrow and congested streets causing difficulty to transport 40ft containers for direct delivery. There can be shuttling service charges applicable usually for the delivery.
  • Expats moving to Thailand, possessing a 365-day non-immigrant visa, with a valid 365-day work permit at the time shipment is imported can import one sea and one air shipments of used household goods under duty free from the country of last residence.
